LALOR / GIAN MANIK

Gian Manik is a contemporary artist based in Melbourne/Naarm.

Having practiced since 2006, Gian has completed a Masters in Fine Art from Monash University in Melbourne, a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) from Curtin University in Perth and is currently signed to Sutton Gallery in Fitzroy. His works challenge traditional conventions of painting as art forms through irreverent exploration of classic art genres and an aversion to stylistic categorisation. Harnessing a contemporary approach of online image sourcing, Gian is able to portray a vast range of periods & locations, and through a combination of traditional references, techniques and influences, his expanded paintings often reflect his own identity, intellect & personality.

Intending to challenge the traditional streetwear conventions by utilising Gian’s contemporary and personal approach, we have worked together on creating two artworks titled “Methods of Detection” & “Jealousy” that we have featured on SS Tee’s & Hooded Fleece. Inspired by the Jesse Edwards x FUCT graphics from the 1990’s with a contemporary and refreshing update, the subject matter champions gay lifestyles in a beautiful, touching way.

Working with our friends at Assignment Studio, we created a campaign that was shot on location at Fitzroy Gardens; A well known area amongst The Gay community in Melbourne for cruising. Scroll down to see more.
